→In Ohio v. American Express (2018), the Supreme Court described Amex as competing with Visa and MasterCard through a different model, one focused on cardholder spending rather than lending. To fund better rewards, the Court said, Amex charges merchants higher fees than its rivals. It held that this cross-side trade-off had to be judged across both sides at once.
