The question
Can one audio service fit different budgets and households?
Posted subscription menu versus global Premium subscriber-month ARPU · June 2024 US price announcement; FY2024 global reporting. Price changes alter unit revenue and can alter purchase quantity, retention and movement between versions; identifying the response requires a stable unit and a credible comparison.
Mechanism 1 · Read the June menu as a menu
Read the June menu as a menu
In June 2024, a Spotify pricing analyst has a menu decision: raise a single price, adjust different versions, or preserve a lower-price route for eligible customers. Spotify’s announcement listed US monthly subscription prices of $11.99 Individual, $16.99 Duo, $19.99 Family and $5.99 Student for new subscribers. The question is not only how much users will pay. It is which subscription they will choose and what other choice they will leave behind. [June 3 announcement](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2024-06-03/adjusting-spotify-premium-prices-in-the-us/).
Mechanism 1 · Read the June menu as a menu
One subscription can contain several accounts
The billing unit therefore matters. Comparing a Family subscription’s posted price with global revenue per Premium subscriber compares a billed household bundle with an account-based aggregate. Assuming every available account slot is occupied introduces another unsupported step. Neither a theoretical full-occupancy per-account price nor the global average measures what a particular customer was charged.

Mechanism 2 · Leaving a version is not always leaving the service
Leaving a version is not always leaving the service
A menu can retain a price-sensitive customer who would otherwise cancel. It can also induce a customer who would have paid more to choose a cheaper version. Those mechanisms compete. A useful analysis tracks movements from each starting plan to each destination, including cancellation and the free tier, along with changes in service costs. A firm-wide subscriber count loses that movement even when it is measured correctly.

Mechanism 2 · Leaving a version is not always leaving the service
The observed ARPU increase has offsets
FY2024 annual monthly ARPU rose €0.30: a company-attributed €0.49 price uplift was offset by €0.12 mix and €0.07 currency.

Mechanism 3 · Growth does not reveal lost growth
Growth does not reveal lost growth
The strongest competing explanation is growth or mix rather than an insensitive demand curve. If underlying demand would have expanded more quickly without a price change, subscriber growth after it can coexist with lost incremental subscribers. Conversely, a fall in ARPU can occur while a locally profitable price change succeeds if lower-priced markets grow quickly. The right counterfactual belongs to the exposed cohort and the same offer.

Investigate growing accounts
A fictional service raises a menu price and sees total accounts grow.
Reveal: Compare comparable exposed cohorts, including renewals, downgrades and cancellations; calculate contribution for the choices customers make.

The answer
An aggregate average cannot replace a plan-level response.
Price changes alter unit revenue and can alter purchase quantity, retention and movement between versions; identifying the response requires a stable unit and a credible comparison. Subscriber acquisition, market mix, currency, trial conversion and feature changes can move realized revenue per subscriber while posted prices change. Spotify’s 2024 management ARPU bridge includes offsetting product/market mix and currency effects, so the observed increase does not measure pure price movement.
